We've just had one of our custom chassis' collected (its on its way to Scotland all snug in the back of a Ford Transit Connect). One of the custom features was the install of a "period" handbrake. It had us scratching our heads for a while, but once the customer came up with the ideal handbrake, it was pretty straight forward to fit the handbrake vertically (for the right look) and tee the hydraulic system with an additional master cylinder. Although this set up wouldn't be considered ideal for road or race car (actually illegal for safety reasons) it is perfectly suitable for a CycleKart. The handbrake has been fixed to a couple of weld-on threaded slugs, a metal bar has then been formed to actuate the second master cylinder mounted at the rear of the chassis. The handbrake uses a standard ratchet and pawl set up so the CycleKart will hold its own on even the steepest gradiant. I'm looking forward to seeing this CycleKart evolve and I'm sure Alisdair and Eric will be sending me some progress reports soon.

A couple of weeks ago we received a phone call from Chris Bietzk at Octane Magazine. He wanted a bit of background information on the CycleKarts and requested a few HD photo's of the Austin. How suprised we were that on page 169 of the October issue we were greeted by a photo and a very apt piece of text....cheers Chris...
Back to building the Brooklands CycleKart and we started thinking about a bonnet. Colin set away with some aluminium and some central heating vents and came up with a bonnet and a piano hinge affair, we'll see how the rest of the car develops next week
Having built the rolling chassis for the Brooklands CycleKart, the next obvious stage was the body panels. However a few finishing touches to the rolling chassis where necessary. The accelerator pedal and Hydraulic brake pedal where fitted, the rear caliper and brake lines fitted and the system was bled with high temperature DOT5 racing brake fluid. The throtte cable was installed after removing the engines original control lever, a heavy duty 420 chain was fitted and we stood back and discussed the body shape. Well obviously it needed a CycleKart UK GRP Rear boat tail....and some side panels, high, low...curved, angled??? Start high with some slight scallops and then if we wanted to drop down we could, maybe even drop one side. Back panels where made by taking a template from the boat tail and it started to look like a coffin on wheels....
Heres a few shots of how the back panel/rear firewall is fitted, we've use 3 m6 bolts to hold the seat back to the chassis (angled part) and the firewall is secured by no6 countersunk screws. Once we're happy with the bodywork all joints will be glued with wood glue and then re-assembled before painting.
So with the side panels fitted we were able to get some perspective, the sides were cut down lightly increasing the slope from the dash area to the front of the CK. We added a panel across the "bonnet" area to strengthen the tub and then started to play with some ideas for the bonnet/grill area. A dash panel was cut over size so we had something to work off.
The show went very well, not as many cars or people as anticipated probably due to being in the eye of a storm (hurricane Bertha) but at least it was warm and dry. The Cyclekarts were received very well, especially when we went photo bombing around the arena. I've added some pics here which may serve as inspiration for another CycleKart build.
We launched the new Brooklands Chassis at the show, you'll notice a dropped chassis, knobbly tyres and a aluminium floor on this one. Overall dimensions remain the same and the front end has recieved a more elegant shape. We built up the rolling chassis on Friday before the show, it'll get body work over the next couple of weeks. The other new product to be added to the inventory is the CycleKart UK Boat-tail, a generic 1920's-1930's GRP rear moulding to finish off your CycleKart.
